Hep C: You and Me with HCV/HIV Co-Infection©

Viral hepatitis progresses faster and causes more liver-related health problems among people with HIV than among those who do not have HIV. Although drug therapy has extended the life expectancy of people with HIV, liver disease—much of which is related to HCV and HBV—has become the leading cause of non-AIDS-related deaths in this population. People with HIV who are co-infected with either HBV or HCV are at increased risk for serious, life-threatening complications.

Hep C: You and Me with HCV/HIV builds upon the Hepatitis C You and Me series by providing in-depth information on liver disease for individuals co-infected with HCV/HIV. Emphasis is placed on wellness strategies, HCV and HIV treatments, working with HIV and HCV care teams, impact of HIV on HCV, risks for liver complications unique to co-infection, and much more. Class participants with HCV/HIV also learn to become peer educators for others living with HCV/HIV co-infection. For more information about this series. click here

Hepatitis C: You and Me for Veterans©

According to HCVets.com, one in ten US Veterans have HCV, which is five times greater than the greater US population. One in five of these Veterans fought in the Vietnam war. Of the 3.5 million Americans infected with HCV, an estimated 234,000 are Veterans. Approximately 174,000 Veterans in government care have been diagnosed with HCV, but an additional 50,000 are thought to carry the infection unbeknownst to them. Some experts estimate that as many Veterans of the Vietnam War will die from HCV infection as were killed in combat.

HCV You and Me for Veterans is a structured, multi-week HCV education and wellness courses for Veterans who are infected with and/or affected by HCV through numerous modes of transmission, including injection drug use, blood exposure during combat, jet/airgun mass immunizations, etc.

Since many Veterans taking the classes are also infected with HIV, the program incorporates an HCV/HIV co-infection educational component throughout all courses. The Center trains interested Veterans to become community health educators on HCV-related issues, and to serve as HCV prevention advocates to other infected/affected Veterans at high-risk for HCV and HCV/HIV co-infection.
