Atlanta, GA, May 30, 2017: For six (6) weeks beginning June 6th, 2017, The NATIONAL HEPATITIS EDUCATION AND WELLNESS CENTER, INC. (NHEWC), in association with The REGINALD & DIONNE SMITH FOUNDATION, will provide a series of structured Hepatitis C (HCV) education and wellness workshops for people who are infected with and/or affected by HCV. The program entitled, Hepatitis C: You and Me, will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00am-3:30pm alternatively at Tangu Recovery Center 159 Forsyth St SW, Atlanta, GA 30303 and Here’s to Life 1115 Ralph D. Abernathy Blvd, Atlanta, Georgia 30310.
The NHEWC’s Executive director, Luther C. Brock, Sr., a disabled veteran living with Hep C created this comprehensive program to help veterans, recovering people and the myriad communities infected/affected by HCV to overcome the challenges of living with Hep C, learn about available treatments, and help to prevent the transmission of the virus. Participants will receive a stipend for their participation as an incentive to attend all workshops and take a pre- and post-learning assessment and program evaluation. The program was made possible through generous grants from Gilead and Merck & Co.
The topics covered over the course of the 8-week series offered at the two locations referenced in this summary include: Introduction to Peer Education, Hepatitis C 101: Understanding the Liver and Hepatitis, Supporting the Newly Diagnosed/Partnering with Your Care Team, Accessing HCV Resources, Complementary and Alternative Therapies for HCV, Treatment for and Monitoring HCV, HCV and HIV Prevention and Transmission, STD’s and HCV, HCV Activism and Advocacy, Mental Health and HCV, and HCV and Spirituality.
The NHEWC and the RDSF have over 20 years of combined experience in bringing critical, culturally competent viral disease education to underserved and vulnerable communities. Tangu and Here’s to Life provide quality education and counseling to individuals who are experiencing or are at risk for substance use disorders.

The Reginald & Dionne Smith Foundation (www.therdsf.org) works with communities, organizations, health care providers, and social support providers in order to improve care, support, and education for men and women living with HIV/AIDS and/or viral Hepatitis, their partners, family members, and advocates with the goal of enhancing the physical, mental, sexual, and emotional health of these men, women and families.
Here’s To Life is a non-profit, 501C-3 community based-organization provides quality education and counseling to individuals who are experiencing or are at risk for substance use disorders. Our goal is to develop and implement activities and programs for individuals and their families that will prevent and/or provide appropriate treatment of substance use disorders. We do this by providing a safe atmosphere for individuals to freely address their addiction as well as the behaviors typically developed through active drug/alcohol use. It is also our intention to ensure that our communities are well informed about the ramifications of substance abuse, HIV, STD’s, domestic violence and other negative issues that plague our communities..
Tangu, Inc. is a non-profit 501-C Georgia Corporation with a mission of providing substance abuse treatment and counseling to persons in metro Atlanta (Fulton County and surrounding communities). Tangu Phase II primary goal is to provide quality affordable treatment services to persons afflicted with substance abuse and addictions.
